I am just moving to a new home on 9 acres with about 1/2 in pasture or grass to mow, will have horse-owner related chores (moving hay & feed, fence repairs, etc.), snow removal on long driveway, gardening and tree moving and hope to find a tractor to accomplish everything for little or no cost. Seriously, I am thinking I need to start with at least a 60" blade and a FEL, with the hope of adding a snow blade and grading blade later. I am not certain I will be to pay the price for a machine that can handle a decent auger for fence building and repair. I have looked at a JD4010 with FEL and 54" blade w/ only 36 hours for around $10,500 and a JD455 w/ 135 hours and a 60" blade for around $5000. Given all the other expenses of a new, old home, I would like to stay under $10,000 and don't mind some mileage. Any advice for this newbee? Green, orange or other color ideas are welcome.

Tim; Welcome to the world of compacts. As most anyone else who has read my posts here will tell you I've allways preached, find a dealer you're comfortable with first. Find out how long they've been in business, usually a dealer that also sells ag equipment in a smaller community will be more concerned for their customer than the big city garden center type dealer, and also have better prices. I've tried a couple times to deal with the big city places and they were allways much higher priced. Any of the big three, Kubota, Deere, or Ford NH have good equipment. I'd be a little shy of lesser known brands with a scant dealer network. Nothing at all wrong with buying used, but there again a good dealer that will put some warranty on the tractor is worth a lot. Buying private is fine too unless problems develop with the tractor then strained relationships can result. Far as my recommendation on the tractor and the price, others with more knowledge on used tractor prices would do better than me, but long as you stick with one of the big three your tractor wiil hold it's resail value should you decide down the road to move to a bigger unit. Frank's right, but I would recommend away from the 455. I think wou will find that the size of these tractors is limiting when it comes to using three point equipment. It has been stated several times in this forum; decide what you need to accomplish, look at the implements that will do a good job, then look at tractors that can handle the implements. The lift arms an the 455 are going to be short, limiting the lift distance. This will effect the type of three point equipment the tractor can handle.
There are some lessons I learned on previous tractors. Get a diesel, four wheel drive is a must if you are going to use a FEL, and get a full catagogy 1 hitch. Some of the garden sized tractors have limited catagory 1 hitches. ....

Tim, if you are considering green paint and hydrostatic drive transmission is not a must; I would suggest looking at a JD 790 or a JD 990 (the 990 might be a bit on the large side of what you were considering) They are VERY good and solid reliable tractors that would fit very well with the uses you have in mind and are right in the price range you are talking about. I would caution that you may find the 4010 a bit underpowered but still a very good tractor as well. The John Deere 4010 thru 4115 as well as 790 & 990 are manufactored 100% by Yanmar for Deere. I think DRankin and F350Lawman can give you some VERY good feed back on both. The Kubota's are VERY good tractors as well and I am sure Art White can give you some excellent guidance as to which my suit you best. Perhaps something along the lines of a B7810? You are gonna have to get out there, look at, demo, and compare. Go with what suits you best. I good dealer is absolutely a must as already covered. ....

I also suggest keeping your eyes out for JD 4100 which were replaced by the new models 4110...They are 99% identical and available in your price range...I have one and love it !!

That is a very good price for a 4010 with FEL and the front grader blade, very good indeed.
Don't underestimate this tractor. We spend a lot of time here discussing the 2210 and the 4110 but the 4010 gets very little press time.
You probably won't need a rear blade if you have a front blade set-up..... the only feature it lacks is the ability to "ditch".
You most likely won't notice the reduced horse power either unless you plan to run a brush hog.... and even then it will do the job with a smaller unit.
The 4010 may be just what you are looking for in both price range and utility.

You guys are great. All the advice is very helpful. I have priced out a new JD 4115 and am suffering from a bit of sticker shock, but the dealer was very helpful. I passed on the 455, based on some research and the advice y'all had. Next I plan to compare the comparable Kubota to the JD4115 (which Kubota would be comparable?) and look at some used models on line, etc. The 4100 idea sounds good and I'll check out the 790 as well.
